Ways of seeing art

A one week intensive art Theory and History Workshop in Mexico City

May 2 - 9, 2026

Hosted and taught by Mark Vazquez-Mackay

About

Mexico has undergone some of the most significant sociological transformations of any nation in the world. From its origins as one of the largest Indigenous civilizations, through European colonization, the struggle for independence, and the emergence of a social revolution, the country has experienced profound and continual change. Throughout these historical shifts, artists have played a critical role in responding to, interpreting, and documenting Mexico’s evolving cultural identity.

This workshop examines Mexican art through the perspective of the artist by situating artistic production within its broader socioeconomic context. Participants will analyze why public murals, mass print media, and traditional crafts emerged as distinct and influential modes of communication for artists working in Mexico.

Each day of the workshop will focus on a specific artistic movement and one to three representative artists. Through close examination of their work, participants will engage with the central analytical question of “why”: Why was this art created, and what social, political, or economic conditions necessitated its production?

Itinerary

We will be staying in a hotel in the historic centre, situated on the traditional territory of Tenochtitlan. Each day, we will visit a site aligned with one of the five analytical lenses through which the artworks will be examined. These visits will be complemented by supplementary cultural experiences designed to contextualize and deepen our understanding of the specific perspectives under consideration.A light reading list will also be provided to participants.

Key sites to be visited include:

  • Templo Mayor, the former ceremonial center of the Mexica (Aztec) civilization

  • Casa Azul - Museo Frida Kahlo

  • Museo Vivo del Muralismo

  • Museo de Arte Popular

  • Museo Nacional de Arte

  • Museo Nacional de Historia Castillo de Chapultepec

Our findings, learnings, explorations, and questions will be recorded in a sketchbook style journal.

In the middle of the week there will be a free day for participants to visit any personal interest locations. Your hosts will help you shape your day and accommodate if needed.
